Employees’ perception of management control systems as a threat: effects on deliberate ignorance and workplace deviance

We examine the impact of employees’ perceptions management control systems (MCS) as a threat on two forms misconduct: deliberate ignorance and workplace deviance. Drawing theory cognitive dissonance, we predict that perceived is associated with decrease in deviance but may also trigger unintended consequences, such ignorance. Hypotheses are tested using survey data from three large hospitals. Taken together, our results suggest MCS have (1) negative curvilinear effect (2) positive linear association Additionally, find need for professional autonomy shapes perception both misconduct. Overall, by providing new empirical evidence how employees perceive their (un)intended add to growing body research effects behaviour.
